I spent today wondering around my home city of San Francisco during a 13 hour layover. I walked the Embarcadero, watched the sea lions and had clam chowder in a sourdough bowl. I peered down from Telegraph Hill and had doppio espresso in North Beach. I got a new bamboo back scratcher in Chinatown. And I felt in a place I was of . . . once. Of course the city is older, more gentrified and less vivacious with every passing year. It's a place family trees go to die; and the place the biggest companies in the world are built. Well, that's more south bay than this old city I suppose. Still, this place is the cultural and spritual anchor of the region.
