I took a Vue workshop led by Sarah Drasner at SmashingConf back in 2018 and I started following her on Twitter as I often used to do with people at conferences. I've been honing my engineering management skills for over a decade now and I like to think I know what I'm doing, but Sarah's worked at the some of the big boys managing engineering teams so I thought there'd be something to learn. Engineering Management for the Rest of Us is a really specific book written for someone in just my position, and it was comforting to see all the things I'm doing right and educational seeing the places I can improve. I wish this book had been around 10 years ago when I hired my first employee at PatientFocus. I learned a lot the hard way on the job by trail and error, talking to peers, and reading more general business books. If I ever find myself promoting somebody to the position of engineering manager I'll definitely recommend this book to them.
