The Easter Rising

Among the many books I picked up in Dublin earlier this month was Conor Kostick and Lorcan Collins' The Easter Rising: A Guide to Dublin in 1916 which detailed the people and places involved in Ireland's failed rebellion against the British empire during WWI. This was not the first and it would not be the end of the story, but the Irish lost badly. Help from the Germans in the form of ammunition had to be scuttled off the coast to avoid capture by the British. The British treated many of the rebels to execution after their surrender, which certainly hardened the hearts of those left behind. This book details the lives and deeds of those executed, as well as the places they defended throughout the city. I was already emotional this week, but it really broke my heart to read how brutal the British were even just a century ago.
