Novelist as a Vocation

Haruki Murakami has written many novels and I haven't read any of them. I've read what he's written about running and collections of short stories, but never one of his novels. But I did recently finish reading him write about being a Novelist as a Vocation. Like his writing about running, his writing about writing shows that it is truly a part of him. He writes because he must. He's lucky that the world cares to read it and he's been able to make a living off of it. He doesn't make anything off of running though, and he's equally passionate about how he needs it. I myself can understand both of these passions, and the weird way in which the rest of the world looks at us. Why do you run for hours in the forest? Why do you spend hours at the keyboard writing? Murakami spends this latest series of essays trying to explain why writing is a calling for him and also how that's affected his life.
