17 August 2023 Last December in Poland I left several books behind accidentally which I just got back when Iwona returned from her recent trip there. One of these was the second book in Ryan Holiday's Stoic Virtues series: Discipline is Destiny. As with all of Ryan's books the language is conversational, the stories involve famous people's lives, and the principles are well illustrated by them. My favorite story was probably that of Lou Gehrig, who learned temperence early in his career from a coach who saw him taking a nip from a flask before a game. The coach said it's a shortcut to handle the pregame jitters, but comes with problems of its own. Gehrig went on to play in more consecutive games of baseball than anyone else until my hero, Cal Ripken. I'll be looking forward to Holiday's next book in the series! ![]() |
