Ayn Rand does not write short books, and We The Living is no exception. Written in the 1930's it reads like any distopian future love story except that it's set in the very real 1920's St. Petersburg. The main character, Kira, is a former bourgeois who tries to live as she watches the souls, the humanity, of those around her slowly destroyed. Kira is polyamorous, requiring two men to fill her needs: one communist, one bourgeois. In the end they both succumb to the force destroying society as it lies about building a new one. Kira is left alone to attempt to flee through the snow. She does not make it.
