I picked up The Word Hord at the Norwich airport as we left England last Fall. I hadn't read a book on just Anglo-Saxon since 2010 and I don't think I finished that one. Videen's book was immediately interesting and in each chapter she weaves together a set of words around a given topic, explaining what they mean and how they relate to modern English. Of course there's a lot of references to Beowulf. For anyone curious about our language's history before the tragedy of 1066 it's worth picking up.
