Frankfurt

10 Oktober 2023 - Frankfurt

Headed home again, finally. Tonight I will snuggle up with Iwona and only half-heartedly scold Eddie and Paula for joining us. Zagreb is a dirty, lively, enormous city. The trains run on time. The Biergartens are open-aired and tree-lined. The people are open and all speak fluent English. And there are plenty of immigrants - I had the spiciest Indian food I've had in a while the night before my race. I asked for Shah Rukh Khan spicy, but the waiter joked they could only provide Salman Khan spicy. This was, perhaps, not the brightest idea, but I broke into a construction site on kilometer 16 that had a port-o-potty. The main cathedral was closed for repairs, making the towers look like metal skyskrapers from a distance. With Croatia now in Schengen it feels like Zagreb is on the ascendency to become a much more expensive place. I stayed at the Westin because they had a pool, and ran into so many Americans. We are not hard to pick out though. We talk. To everyone. Everywhere. I'm guilty of it. Last night in the sauna I held a round table discussion of sauna edict in various countries after I broke the towel rule. One local woman argued that her cotton nightgown counted as a towel. Another prefered the nudity of Finland. I just recounted in self defense that in Norway towels are not used. And now I find myself again in Lufthansa's waiting room, Frankfurt.
