When buying books in foreign countries at touristic sites there aren't often many options in English. Often there are none. The Exploration of Škocjan Caves was thus a welcome find. It's a mixed work, half a tale from this century of explorers recreating the 19th century journey recounted in the second half. The first part was translated from Slovenian and includes photography of their LARPing. The second part, translated from German, is Friedich Müller's first person account of exploring the underground river from waterfall 18 to waterfall 25. The one thing really missing here is a cave map. Included are black and white photographs taken at the time which give something of a flavor of their travails. There was a lot of falling into freezing cold water, and, without a weather forecast, constant fear that the water might suddenly rise from rainfall outside. It was a nice way to relive my own journey through the cave, which though thankfully dry piqued my acrophobia more than I expected.
