2 Oktober 2023 - Novo Mesto Yesterday after my race and the unavoidable nap I sat down for a long evening of reading. 31 years ago my Uncle Bob (Grandma's brother) bought Rush Limbaugh's The Way Things Ought to Be. I know because he put a sticker in it with his contact information. My dad inherited from him and then I inherited it from my dad. I was a teenager 31 years ago and annoyed when dad put on talk radio rather than music in the car. Many years later I annoyed my own kids with El Rushbo. While not the first conservative on talk radio, for a long time Limbaugh was the most successful. And though people tried to cancel him for years, none ever succeeded. When he died a couple years ago it was the end of an era. Well, conservative talk radio lives on, but it's not the same. Reading this book took me back to 1992 when I was just starting to become aware of politics. Ross Perot, Rodney King, Anita Hill, etc. are all names I remember well from back then. I was quite taken with Bill Clinton's oratory during the election that year which led to many debates with my dad. And Limbaugh's book has aged surprisingly well - the examples may be specific to that time period, but the principles are timeless. Not that I agree with them all. I certainly wouldn't cheer on school prayer today the way I did in 1992. It was good to dip back into those memories though. ![]() |
