Yesterday I crossed into Slovenia on the highway from Croatia and was greeted by the sight of the now-unused customs stations. Last year when we drove to Croatia we had to pass through border control. But as of January first of this year Croatia is in Schengen. And they have the Euro now. I still saw prices listed in Kuna and Euros, but everwhere took Euros. Now here in Slovenia they've had the Euro and been part of Schengen a while longer. Today I ran Novo Mesto's half marathon, which mostly followed the river Krka. It was a hot day and I neglected to bring a ballcap with me. Slovenia is the 14th European country that I've run a race in. The little towns which I ran through along the river were all nicely kept up and I have never seen so many people playing accordions in my life! The course was fairly flat and followed the path of the Slovenian Camino for about half of it, but I ran one of my worst half marathon times. I didn't start out caring about the time and I just enjoyed the pleasure of running. Maybe that's a bit too zen for a competetive event. I think it's beautiful to be able to come to this country and run.
