Polytopia

This week I've been reading Walter Isaacson's biography of Elon Musk and in the last chapters he mentioned offhand that Musk was obsessed with the game Polytopia. I don't usually indulge my predilection for playing videogames because they can be so engrossing, but I decided to give Polytopia a try. It's better than scrolling through YouTube shorts though, which is such a colossal waste of time. I've actually considered deleting the YouTube app, but I literally bought my first cellphone in 2009 for the purpose of making an uploading YouTube videos. Revenue from that more than covered the cellphone bill for 8 years, which is how I justified the expense. But most phone apps these days seem designed to addict you to show you ads. YouTube is no exception and they kicked small creators like me out of their revenue sharing program 5 years ago. And when I switched my home address in Google Maps to my place in Norway they started deleting YouTube videos that fell afoul of Norway's stricter censorship laws. It was only this year that I realized the connection and switched my Google Maps home address to Nevada. I love Google products for the most part, but they bleed data into eachother in a really terrible way.

Polytopia is supposed to be the topic of this blog however. It's a game where players compete for control of an island. It's a bit like Fortnite in that respect, but otherwise not. And the graphics are boxy like Minecraft. The game clock is more like a board game, where each person gets a turn to harvest and allocate resources, battle other players, acquire skills, and build things. Gameplay sort of feels like Settlers of Catan, but Polytopia lasts much longer. I'll start a game and only when I finish realize that 3 hours have gone by. The game really sucks me in and makes me lose track of time! The first day I played it for overs 24 hours straight.
