20 April 2024 - Bellinzona As the sun sets behind the Alps here in Bellinzona, laying in my tent I finished reading Leander Kahney's fanboy paean to Apple's CEO, Tim Cook. I read it as a followup to Walter Isaacson's somewhat more honest biography of the previous CEO, Steve Jobs. This book, however, is a puff piece that's not so much a biography of Tim Cook as a history of Apple after Steve Jobs' death. The book contains absolutely no criticism of Cook. Just look at some chapters: "Hot New Products", "A Greener Apple", "Cook Fights the Law and Wins", "Doubling Down on Diversity", "Apple's Best CEO". Kahney didn't even actually interview Tim Cook for the book. He went out of his way to say he hadn't researched Cook's personal life because he "respected his privacy". And this is a biography? How can you write about sustainability and not talk about the planned obsolescense of Apple products? How can you just clap your hands that Cook says he's gay without writing anything about that part of his life? I almost feel bad leaving it in the little free library at the campsite for some unsuspecting future reader, but if you pick it up you're probably like me writing this review on a MacBook. ![]() |
