23 June 2024 - Muralto Summer concert season is in full swing here in Switzerland. Last weekend we saw the opera Carmen live for the first time courtesy of Oper für Alles, where there is free open air seating in front of a huge screen they set up outside the operahouse in Zürich. Then on Sunday we saw a piano concert by Fazil Say attended by a strong contingent of the Turkish diaspora. Less impressive than Carmen, but still enjoyable. Then Friday I took the train to Grenchen for the Summerside Festival, which is three days long but I only went for the one where Megadeth was playing. I got there in the morning to setup my tent while the sun was still shining because I knew the afternoon and evening would be a rainy mess. I've never camped at a festival before, but the ability to go take a nap in the afternoon whenever I wanted during the festival was such a luxury. Megadeth didn't take the stage until after midnight, so I don't think my usual 10 o'clock bedtime would have let me survive until that late without a nap. It was the first time I've seen Megadeth live and they did not disappoint even though Dave Mustaine is well over 60 now. They even played a set list of songs all from my childhood - "Trust" was the newest song they played and it's almost 30 years old. It was everything 15 year old me would have wanted, but couldn't afford or make time for. After a few hours sleep I got my muddy self onto the train home from Grenchen to clean up for the train trip Iwona planned for us to Locarno. She found a deal on the slower train (IR46) that stops often and goes through the older, shorter Gotthard tunnel rather than the intercity express. And what did we find here Locarno? The Jazz Ascona festival! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
