26 June 2024 - Adetswil Volker Reinhardt's Geschichte der Schweiz is the first survey of Swiss history I've read since 2003, back when I was studying German in college. History hasn't changed much, but now I have a much more intimate firsthand knowledge of the country. The stories of Dufour and Guisan are now just as well known to me as that of Tell was. I can picture the passes and castles and cathedrals from memory. That all made Reinhardt's account much more personal. And while it's a short book, the language is quite high register so I had to pull out Google Translate quite often along the way. Definitely worth a read all the same. ![]() |
