20 July 2024 Since last November I've been spending some of my free time studying Japanese, reading about Japan, and generally taking a deep dive into the language and culture. I never thought I would find the rote memorization of kanji to be so rewarding, but I guess I'm getting on in years. The two in the title of this blog, 親日, together form the word shinnichi which means Japanophile. I'm slowly becoming one, as I've seen happen to other people over the years. I've done this with many subjects over the years, from Chile to Norwegian to Oliver Cromwell. My tsundoku piles are littered with books on subjects I was once interested in. And now I'm focused on the land of the rising sun. As readers of the blog may have noticed by clicking on the kanji in the header that I'm recording kanji as I learn them much in the way I've previously tracked many things, from wine to trails species on the tree of life. Organizing things is just so satisfying. |
