15 March 2025 - Caixas Stopping in a bookstore in the Cais do Sodré train station earlier this week I got to talking to the clerk who is a big fan of Fernando Pessoa, and she convinced me to buy a book: Lisbon Poets. I have a soft spot for poetry in strange languages, and this edition was even bilingual so I didn't have to use Google Translate. My thoughts? Luís de Camões is classical. Had real adventures. And wrote about them. Cesário Verde is excellent at describing things. His "O sentimento dum ocidental" is definitely my favorite of the collection. Mário de Sá-Carneiro writes angsty teen poems. They're full of emotion, buts it's simplistic juvenile emotion. Florbela Espanca seems like the DEI hire. Whiny and not that insightful. Fernando Pessoa's poetry has depth. One can see why he is so respected. ![]() |
