15 March 2025 - Paço de Arcos

Yaroslav Trofimov's account of the first year of the War in Ukraine is a fairly personal one, as he not only chronicles the major events but also his travels around the country reporting on what was happening. Trofimov is quite upbeat throughout and gives the story a good pace with plenty of maps. Sadly, it only an account of the first year of a still ongoing war that has cost hundreds of thousands of lives, created millions of refugees, and cost billions of dollars. The media has lambasted the Trump administration's handling of Ukraine, but he does have both sides at the table talking about a ceasefire this week. Trofimov wisely calls his book a second draft of history that is likely incomplete. Reading it as such is, however, an excellent window into a better understanding of the conflict. I left it in one of the many piles of books in every room of the Solar Palmeiras hotel where I've been staying the past few days.
