30 March 2025 - Kleppestø After coming here in December to find mice damage I also had a big mess to clean up. So I thought that if I locked everything up in the cupboards rather than leaving food on open shelves which the mice had fansacked, then I would be okay. But the mice were persistent and gnawed a hole into the back of the cupboard, creating an even bigger mess for me this time when I arrived on Friday. I've spent most of the weekend since cleaning out the hytte. (Outside of a short trip to the pool and sauna every day.) The mice, who I have seen every night around 4:30 AM when their activities wake me up, have created multiple entrances beyond the cut holes which are too big for the pipes under the sink. One in the wall under the bench by the table. One through the rotten floor under the window in the main room. And one through the rotten floor under the window in my bedroom. Last night I put an upside down trashcan on the hole in my bedroom and so was awoken when they thumped around inside it trying to figure out how to get through. I didn't find any mousetraps at the grocery stores yesterday, so I have to wait until tomorrow. In the meantime I chopped up the cupboard for firewood rather than try to salvage it, which was a nice way to spend a sunny Sunday. I've also been taking bags of things I don't need to donate to Fretex, because I'm not going to move them to Switzerland. This summer I'll be saying goodbye to the hytte, with many happy memories and no regrets of leaving all the troubles of living there behind. ![]() |
