27 April 2025 - Bludenz

Today I ran the 7 kilometer race here instead of the half marathon I planned. It was probably a smart idea. I took a 2 hour nap afterward. And it marked the 22nd European country that I've run a race in, so I'm more than halfway done with the coutries of the continent. With so many people and small streets Bludenz wasn't really a race to get a good time, despite the perfectly cool April weather. Yesterday I crossed the Ill river and hiked up a canyon called the Bürser Schlucht although the creek was called the Alvierbach. The trail was officially closed, but that didn't stop me or the other hikers I encountered along the way. Österreich always makes me think of Schrödinger, who didn't exactly believe in societal rules or norms as they might have applied to him. The wave equation of quantum mechanics is as Austrian as Heisenberg's matrix equation is German. The local Fohrenburger brewery sponsored the race today and provided our libations thereafter. While the 7K was more than enough to wipe me out today, I cannot but gaze upon the nearby cloud-shrouded mountains with desire. This country really demands more of my time.
