Along the Váh Again...

9 April 2025 - Slovakia

Today I find myself again following the Váh river across Slovakia, although this time eastward rather than westward. Last summer's trip was here was also educational, but involved visiting the mountains and countryside rather than the cities. Ergo this trip I am visiting the cities. After enjoying Bratislava I am now on the way to Košice, Slovakia's second city, which is famous, at least in my eyes, for having the oldest marathon in Europe. It's actually my third time in Slovakia though, as three years ago this month I ran up a snowy Kasprowy Wierch from Zakopane in Poland to cross the Slovakian border for the first time in the mountains.

The train passes right by the confluence of the White Váh and the Black Váh, which is considered the start of the Váh. After following the former a little while the train passes from the Danube river basin, where water flows to the Black Sea, in the Vistula river basin, where water flows to the Baltic Sea. Here are the best views of the snowcapped high Tatras.
