I recently read another of Ken Mogi's books on Japanese life philosophy, this time on the topic of Ikigai. He starts off by introducing the "5 pillars of ikigai" and then the rest of the book is anecdotes about Japanese people that illustrate these principles.

  1. Start small
  2. Releasing yourself
  3. Harmony and sustainability
  4. The joy of little things
  5. Being in the here and now

While definitely relevent for achieving professional mastery, I wouldn't necessarily say that guiding principles for life can be summed up in these 5 pillars. Certainly following Mogi's idea of ikigai as an individual can lead to a mindful life, but it says little about relating to other humans and society at large. Perhaps Mogi intends this book to be read alongside his other book on nagomi. It was nevertheless an entertaining read.
