8 August 2025 - Szczecin Szczecin is a decent sized city with a rich history. It's been a part of Poland since WWII when the Germans we expelled. Before that it was called Stettin and ruled by Germans, Danes, Swedes, Prussians, and even the Polish Piasts nearly a thousand years ago. Catherine the Great, empress of Russia who engineered the 18th century partition of Poland was born there. It's the last stop on the Droga Pomorska and the first on the Via Imperii, the old trade road from the Baltic down through the Alps to Rome. We arrived yesterday from Łeba and now West Pomerania is the fifteenth Polish Voivodeship (of sixteen) that I've been in. This morning the dogs and I ran the "red route" to over 40 historically interesting sites around the Stare Miasto (old city). Now we are driving back to Switzerland. ![]() |
