Fran Lebowitz is someone I'd never heard of until Netflix released the miniseries Pretend It's a City and I was introduced to her marvelous character. The series follows a conversational format between her and Martin Scorsese where he seems to be the one who is starstruck. I found this very odd, because I had never heard of this Lebowitz lady before. She smoked like a chimney and sounded like my Nana and had the sharpest biting wit one would expect from someone raised in the 20th century. So when I heard she was coming to Zürich I couldn't resist going to see this character. And I did. And while she had her moments I was disappointed how often she stooped to the level of the crowd and just engaged in mindless Trump-bashing. Neverhtheless, I picked up The Fran Lebowitz Reader, a collection of her essays, and read it . . . often laughing out loud. It seems she hasn't written much recently, as the books aneccdotes were all from the 70's and 80's. But, for me, that was just perfect since Lebowitz reminded me of my grandmother and thus my childhood. She is a delightful misanthrope.
