Carney's Speech

25 January 2026 - Switzerland

Local news here in Switzerland collides with international news this week as heads of state come and sound off at the World Economic Forum here in Davos. It's a nice little town with a good mountain to run up. The speech that seems to have impressed the most thus far is that of the Canadian prime minister, Mark Carney. Coming in last year to replace Trudeau and save their Liberal Party from defeat in the election he co-opted many of the policies that made Conservative Pierre Poilievre popular against Trudeau. Carney was previously head of the Bank of England and his approach to leadership appears to be more fiscally conservative than his predecessor. But, admittedly, I haven't followed his administration that closely. The speech from Davos is worth hearing though, as it enunciates a strategy for defense of the rules-based international order that sounds almost Swiss. Almost.
