15 February 2026 - St. Moritz

At 7AM on a February Sunday in the Zürich Hauptbahnhof most people have skis. The draw of the sport is ever part of Switzerland's story. I, however, am going to watch a horse race. So I have a book and a bag of warmer clothing. Walking to the train station my umbrella protected me from the rain, but in St. Moritz the thermometer is well below freezing. Which is good, since White Turf is a horse racetrack on a frozen lake. I haven't been to a horserace since Steeplechase a decade ago in Nashville, which seems like another life now. Just to the south the Winter Olympics are going on in the Italian Alps, but I'm skipping that event like I did Paris. Both were right in my backyard, but I haven't been since Atlanta. And my former home of Norway always dominates. Somehow a horserace on a frozen lake seems more exciting. And I was already in Tirano and Bormio a couple years back.
