I finally got Elizabeth Roberts' Realm of the Black Mountain: A History of Montenegro only the day before my trip there due to shipping delays. Ergo I only had time to read the last chapter before my trip. It's an interesting way to read a history book. The last chapter covered 2006-23, the period since independence. Montenegro was also the last of the former Yugoslav republics I visited, so I had that wealth of experience and recent memories of Montenegro as I read Roberts' history. The book is well researched and engagingly written. I will no doubt be referring to it for years to come.
