Jia Jiang's book Rejection Proof is a very personal story of a man who decides to overcome his fear of rejection by seeking it out. And video it for a blog, Rejection Therapy. Along the way to conquering his fear, Jiang became YouTube famous. He used this to start a speaking career and get a deal to write this book. In addition to sharing his personal story, Jiang also provides a framework for thinking about rejection:

Rethink

  • rejection is a human interaction and has 2 sides
  • rejection is an opinion
  • rejection has a number; enough nos to get to a yes

Taking a No

  • ask why before goodbye
  • retreat to a lesser request, don't run
  • collaborate, don't argue
  • switch up, don't give up

Positioning for a Yes

  • give my why
  • start with I
  • acknowledge doubts
  • target the audience

Giving a No

  • be patient and show respect
  • be direct
  • offer alternatives

Upsides

  • motivation
  • self-improvement
  • worthiness
  • character building

Find Meaning

  • find empathy
  • find value
  • find purpose

Freedom

  • freedom to ask
  • freedom to accept yourself

Power

  • detachment from results

Coming at the tail end of a rejection train that was my latest jobhunt, this book helped me reframe that experience.
