25 April 2026 - Erlenbach Gebrauchsanweisung für Rom is a travel book that I picked up before heading to Rome last Fall. Written from a German perspective and organized around the various piazzas of the Eternal City, I thought it would be useful. Schönau writes in a light-hearted tone, but delves deeply into a specific aspect of history or culture associated with each piazza she writes a chapter on. Reading it mostly after returning from my trip to Rome many of the piazzas are now colored by my memories of running or wandering through them. And I think that might be the right way to read the book. I often feel that visiting a new place I don't know enough about the history of it, but reading the history afterward is often enriched by my experiences there. So it is now also with Rome.
