14 May 2026 - Erlenbach

Today is a holiday here in Zürich. It's been a busy couple weeks so far this month. Iwona dumped me to start things off, so I had some reorganization to do before my mom and David arrived last week. And I ran the Sihltaler Frühlingslauf on the first (also a holiday). Mom and David got here on the fifth. I had not yet met her new husband David, but he is an affable fellow. Tuesday they were, of course, wiped out from travelling so we played it slow. Wednesday they did some exploring while I was at work and then we went to Bad Zurzach in the evening. The European health spa was not something they had experienced before; hot springs, sauna, salt pool, etc. Then on Thursday night the rain let up and we did a hike from Uetliberg to Felsenegg, taking the train up and then the cable car down. I was a bit worried about my 70-year-old mother doing this 6 kilometer hike, but in the end it wasn't too tough for them. Friday they spent on the lake, taking the boat to Rapperswil castle and back. Then in the evening we went to the symphony. It has been really nice to share with them so many of the things I take for granted living here. For the weekend I took them to the French part of Switzerland for a differnt vibe. Saturday morning we rode the train to Luzern and then got on panorama trains with roof windows from there to Interlaken and then on to Montbovon before getting off for our final destination in Bulle. Sadly the castle there is undergoing renovations. Still, we visited the Maison de Gruyères and learned about cheese production before having a fondue dinner in the old walled city on the oppidum there. Then Sunday I got in a nice long run before we went to the Cailler chocolate factory in Broc. Then Monday and Tuesday they did more exploring and museums in Zürich while we spent the evenings playing Scrabble together. Yesterday morning I rode the train with them to the airport for their flight and said goodbye. It was too short a visit.
