The Last Few Days in Romania...

24 May 2026 - Kronstadt

I've been in Romania for the past few days working, sight-seeing, and risking my life in a race. I've taken a lot of notes in my journal, but I have focused on doing and learning things during this short trip rather than taking the time to blog.

Most importantly I need to do a post-mortem of my DNF in the Transylvania 50K. It has been hard to not to see it as a failure, but turning back when I did definitely lowered my chances of being one of the two dozen people who fell off of the mountain in the unsafe conditions and were seriously injured.

The other thing that I've been struggling with is my strong identification with the people of Siebenbergen who built many of the towns in this part of Romania and who were ethnically cleansed out of Romania by the Communist government and literally sold to West Germany during the Cold War. Those few who remain struggle to retain their culture. Most of the people living in the town I'm staying in tonight would call it Brașov rather Kronstadt. And then there's also a million Hungarians the Romanian government didn't manage to ethnically cleanse.

So I will be writing some more topical blogs about my trip in the coming days, but for enjoy this video of the funicular ride up from Rosenau to the Bauernburg above the town:
