Wednesday of this week I saw Metallica. Of course they opened with Ecstasy of Gold. Of course they were awesome. I never in my life thought I would be so close to these gods of my teenage years. I could have touched them...and been swiftly whisked out of the stadium by security guards, but I got to see that they are not gods but men. Of course I knew this forever, but evidenting and knowing are distinct states. And I loved these men more for their musical contribution to our society despite wronging Dave Mustaine. If there is a victim to the story it is the brilliant Dave Mustaine. Cliff Burton died. Jason Newsted was driven out of the band. But Mustaine wrote the songs that made Metallica. If Black Sabbath could bring back Ozzy Osbourne and Van Halen could bring back David Lee Roth, why can't Metallica bring back Dave Mustaine? That is a concert I want to see.
