Malcolm Hislop originally wrote in English, but I didn't know that when I picked up a French translation of Comprendre les Châteaux Forts during my Gruyères exile a couple years back. It's a book with copious illustrations, but a bit hard to read because looking up French words of castle things I often found that I didn't really know the word in English either. I have been to many a castle featured in the book, but there's also many that I haven't been to either. Much like when I read Castles Around the Baltic Sea last summer, now I want to see some of these places in person!
