Siebenburgen changed the way that I viewed the world.

Western and Northern Poland was once majority Deutsch. The cities, castles and infrastructure were built by them. The Soviets wanted to keep eastern Poland that they stole under the Molotov - von Ribbentrop pact. So they offered this part of Deutschland as a consolation prize. And ethnically cleansed it of the Deutsch, sending them off as slave labor to Siberia.
But Siebenburgen was in "independent" Romania. And so it was only later that Romania sold their Deutsch slaves to the BRD. Denuding their countryside of some of its most productive people who had lived there for centuries was a for profit venture. Being in a region already frequently swept by conquerors, the Deutsch had built Kirchenburgen - fortress churches. I got to visit some this Spring. Some were strong and fighting on despite the slave sales of their members and demographic decline. Some were beyond the point of defense and still gathering for worship in falling apart churches. And some were just abandoned.
I could not unsee it. Towns like Rosenau and Neustadt ethnically cleansed of Deutsch people with historical monuments crumbling around them from neglect. And once majority Hungarians now second class citizens. This is the replacement future that awaits the whole Western world if demographic trends continue. Thirty years ago I started having kids, four of them in total, and today I still have no grandkids.
It's not hard to see the Kirchenburgen as our future throughout Europe and North America. The surge of the right in both places is a reaction to being replaced. It may be a losing battle against billionaires who prefer cheap labor, but it is one worth fighting.
