Stuart Gillespie's Food Fight introduced me to a new definition of malnutrition, that includes both being underweight and being overweight. Bad is bad, after all. Unfortunately, after that insightful restructuring of a term it just went downhill.
Gillespie is fundamentally anticapitalist. Famine is portrayed as only being caused by European colonialism in the 3rd world. Famine in Soviet Russia goes unmentioned. A famine in Britsh India in Bengal killed 3 million is offered as proof, while to the north in China more than 10 times that many were dying in a famine caused by Mao's policies. Eventually one realizes that Gillespie's book is really against capitalism and "neoliberalism" rather being against malnutrition. Apparently governments that he shows create regulations to protect the business models of large corporations just need to pass even more regulations to solve the problem. Government solutions to problems created by governments. It's definitely a solution only someone who's spent their whole life working in government would suggest. Everything looks like a nail if your only tool is a hammer.
Don't waste your time on this book like I did.
