9 September 2026 - Tence

Last night brought more rain. Up at 5AM to pee, I decided to stand outside and take a shower in Nature for a little while. Unfortunately it just wasn't raining that hard, so it made me more cold than clean. I dozed in the tent for a couple more hours after that before getting up to face the day. Fortunately I have a raincover for my backpack and a poncho. Still, the morning walk to Montfaucon-en-Velay was a wet one! Ponchos are about as good at keeping sweat in as they are at keeping rain out. I found a café with good wifi to work for the afternoon and have lunch in. The plat du jour was some sort of tuna pizza and roast rabbit, but I was quite hungry and scarfed it all up.

Fortunately the rain cleared up for the afternoon, but it was still cold. Singing helped though, and I made up a song:

There were several small towns along the 10 kilometers to Tence, but having sat all afternoon I didn't dally. In Tence I began the ritual of always having a reserve sandwich in my pack by picking one up before dinner. I got to town a bit before 7, so I had time to get a beer before dinner. La Bête, it was blueberry flavored just like Sweetwater Blue back in Atlanta. After dinner I walked out of town and found myself a nice secluded spot on the backs of the Lignon river to camp for the night.
