One of the cool things about Bern is the zoos are free. This segment starts where they keep the brown bears on a hillside next to the Aare river. The trail then follows the Aare for several kilometers with nice views of the city across the river. And the main zoo, Dählhölzli, the trail crosses to the other bank, so one has views across the river to the animals on the hillside of the other bank. At Wabern the trail starts to climb up through city streets until, entering the forest, the climb gets steep. Then there are fields on the hillside and views down to the city and then farmland below. At Kehrsatz the trail descends again, reaching almost down to the bahnhof there before ascending the hillside again.
