HelsinkiLast Blog | Index | Next Blog Books | Project Ninety | Training 23 February 2022 - Helsinki It's fabulous to be travelling without a mask again, just like eating and shopping and indoor events since Freiheitstag. If we can't secure freedom all the time at least we can celebrate when we're given some. Today I return to Bergen through Helsinki. Helsinki still has everyone masked, unlike Switzerland, as do my Finnair flights. But I know I can take it off again once I get back to Norway. Small steps... As I looked out at the frozen Baltic coming in to land here, I couldn't helped but be awed by the beauty of Nature. Even spending so many days lately in view of the Alps there's still so much out there in the world to be impressed by. One of the things I've learned about happiness is to cultivate awe. ![]() And on my second trip to Helsinki I'm struck by their completely foreign (that is, non-indoeuropean) language. Behind a veil of mystery it remains. Fortunately there's Swedish or even English available too, which is much closer to my mother's tongue. My own tongue is more of a blend as I find myself forgetting my audience and drifting of into something unintelligable to them. Leaving Helsingbors on a Widerøe prop plane has been a bumpy proposition, but at least they speak Norwegian. And today I managed to finsh an excellent book on the invention, production and distribution of the covid vaccine written by an MIT professor. Statistically speaking I've maybe got 2000 books left to read if I manage 50 a year until my mid-eighties when I'm likely to expire, so it's always great to read something succinct and well-written. |
