The conference started today before I even got to Ftan. The plan was to meet in the dining car on the 12:38 train from Zürich to Landquart. Small problem: they decided to run the train without a dining car. So I didn't find any fellow conference attendees until I got to Landquart and switched trains. Then we managed to bunch up in a car together and I practiced my Deutsch. Then we piled into a bus with skiers at Scuol up to Ftan. Ftan is at 1650 m, and the Hochalpines Institut which is our venue is up the hill from there. During the week it's a boarding school for world class skiers, and their trophy wall includes all the recent Olympics and world championships. Some of them are in Beijing now, which means we have plenty of space for the conference. My understanding of the event is that it's something like BarCamp. We'll see. I'm not really sure what to talk about. It's been 4 years since the last conference I went to, and even longer since I spoke at one. I'm hoping to get back in the swing of things this weekend.

I started off with a run before dinner. The views up here are breathtaking, but the altitude really affected me more than usual. Dinner and the socializing afterward allowed me to get to know some interesting people.
