SoCraTes - Day 2Last Blog | Index | Next Blog Books | Pics | Project Ninety | Training 4 February 2022 - Ftan The day started with breakfast where I talked with some new people. Then was the presentation and organization of the day's talks. I was excited when an alternative to riding the chairlift up the mountain was presented, because I'd been dreading that a bit. The first talk was Tasio Guevara on modern data architecture. We had to move from the pavillion to the aula because so many were interested. He presented the data lake (in S3 because he works at AWS) as a better way to store data than relational DBs. The takeaway is that data architecture is for data storage; it needs to be extracted and processed for applications. ![]() Next I went to another Amazonian Ross McEwan's discussion session on interviewing. He wanted to tell us about Amazon's process, but many of us wanted to share our own experiences interviewing people. It says something about the age demographics of the conference that a session on interviewing was mostly a discussion from the perspective of the interviewer. The last talk I went to before lunch was Oliver Nautsch's talk on joining a chaotic project. He's also my roommate, so I picked this one more on the speaker than an interest in the topic. He used Cynefin framework to decide his approach which was a new tool to me. Last up I joined a discussion on open source projects led by Andres Almiray. We discussed the recent developer who put infinite loops in a couple of his widely used libraries on NPM and our own experience with open source. Andres has a widely used project he doesn't maintain and a new open source project he's evangelizing, JReleaser. The day ended with a hike up the mountain to the restaurant where we would have fondue. I had an excellent coversation on the way up with Patrick and by the top most of the group was far behind us. We watched the sun set from the patio there and then went inside where we had fondue and way too much brandy. Then it was time to sled down the mountain back to Ftan! It was quite dark and I lost the trail several times and many people passed me by as I braked with my feet. ![]() |
