5 February 2022 - Ftan

The day started off with breakfast where, like every day, I sat with some new people and talked to them. There's 40+ people here, and I'm trying to meet them all. In the morning we saw people present their talks and then we organized them for the day. I decided not to give a talk because I want to attend them. I've also realized how out of the loop I am on a lot of things.

The first talk of the day was Barny Sudy's on microfrontends. Rather than loading up one huge bundle of Javascript that does everything in an application, the pendulum has swung back to multiple files that are loaded as needed. HTTP 3 and javascript adding dynamic imports has made this possible.

Second talk I heard from Pablo Vergés was about Jim Tamm's book on "Radical Collaboration".

The last talk I went to before lunch was on building a Kubernetes operator in Python with Vadim Bauer. I haven't had the chance to use Kubernetes yet, so I thought I could learn something.

After lunch I listened to Sandro Ibig go through his table of contents for a book that he wants to write on TDD. Lots more philosophy than I expected!

Dara's IoT & Security talk went into a description of Parsec, which handles security on top of AWS's Greengrass. He evangelized quite a bit for it, so I wouldn't really have called it a general discussion of the topic. If you want to learn Rust it's apparently a friendly project to join.

I played hooky after that and ran down to the Inn River along beautiful snowy trails. While well maintained, they were right on a cliff at points. I still saw small children sledding along with their parents. Considering the number of times I went off piste last night I would not have tried it! Then I cheated and took the bus back up the hill. Back at the school I ran into an owl tied up to a bench outside. Eventually his owner came to collect him, as apparently it was a demonstration for the kids here. I don't think I've ever been so close to an owl before!

In the evening after dinner a number of us went down to the Bogn Engiadina in Scuol, which was a nice local bathhouse using mineral water from springs nearby. This was very relaxing and I've totally gotten used to the nude aspect as well. Even 5 years ago that would be hard to imagine! The night buses from Scuol up to Ftan are not actually buses, but taxis you have to call if you want them to drive the route. Back at the school we finally had game night, where I learned to play Brändi Dog, which is very close to the American Sorry!, but with teams and some other quirky rules.
