10 March 2022 - Konyaalti

While the Russian and Ukrainian foriegn ministers are meeting here in Antalya, Iwona and I sepnt another day exploring ancient cities. We walked up the beautiful travertine wall into Heirapolis, where the water from the hot springs above is actively depositing and they require you to walk barefoot on the the bright white rock. Clearly designed for tourists, but incredible all the same. Afterward we went to the museum we missed yesterday at the top in Hierapolis, which had some impressive statuary. One wishes they had left the statues where they were intended to be in the city, but they're understandably easier to guard in the museum I suppose.

Laodicea is a city on a hill across the valley from Heirapolis, and one strongly associated with early Christianity. Lore has the apostle Paul visiting here on his tour of Asia Minor and an important 4th century church council was held here as well. While we were there the temperture dropped to near freezing and the wind really picked up.

Then it was a matter of driving back to Antalya through the snow in the mountains.
