7 March 2022 - Evrenseki

Today's plan was to enjoy a lazy day in the sun on the beach. After breakfast Iwona availed herself of the resort's spa while I went down to the beach to read in the sunshine. I got about an hour before it started to rain on me and I came inside to read instead. Relaxing, but not as relaxing as I'd hoped. Iwona faired better and was glowing when we reunited for lunch. Our project for the afternoon was another ancient city, Side, which is also a modern day town. Fewer of the ruins are restored than at Perge, but some have been reworked into portions of modern structures currently in use.

We also realized today what "all inclusive" means at the resort we're staying at and I still can't believe it's only costing $42 a night. The recent inflation of the Turkish lira has really made this an inexpensive vacation! Insterestingly the majority of guests here are Russian - families enjoying spring break. I talked to a Russian woman today who was embarassed to tell me where she was from because of Putin's war on Ukraine. I do not blame the ordinary people of Russia for this terrible war; Putin has visited much suffering on them as well over the past two decades. Meanwhile Erdogan, the Turkish president, has a good repoire with Putin and Ukraine's resident Zelensky and invited them to peace talks here in Antalya. We've seen 3000 years of history and they're still making more here . . .
