Hangry, Mythen & Dogs29 April 2023 It's been an exciting weekend so far. On Friday evening I finished an enjoyable book, Hangry, by Mike Evans, who started GrubHub. The book juxtaposes his startup journey with a crosscountry bike journey he took after quitting post IPO. Evans is roughly my age, grew up in Georgia, went to an engineering school, and worked in the startup world. To say that his language speaks to me is an understatement. But vernacular aside, the underlying message that life is a journey where we help others resonated strongly with me. Evans is also brutally honest about the errors he's made along his own journey. I'll probably never ring the opening bell at the stock exchange on Wall Street, but reading Evans' story I feel right there with the ups and downs. And having walked the Camino de Santiago his description of the cross country bikeride resonates as well. What you remember is the conversations you have with people you meet. I've never used GrubHub and I may never still, but Evans' book is a about a human's journey through life and that resonates in spades. Today Iwona and I hiked over the mountains from Alpthal to Schwyz along the Via Jacobi. Trail number 4. As we have so many a weekend now. This took us to Haggenegg, which at 1414 m is the highest along the route to Santiago in Switzerland. There there is a chapel and an excellent little restaurant with unbelievable views of the Vierwaldstädtersee and the Laurzersee and the Alps. I ran around the Laurzersee last summer and almost got a 10K PR. Almost. Today was 400 meters up and 800 meters down over 10K. The sun was mostly shining, but there was also rain. And other people along the way; some nice, some more interested in complaining about our flagrant disregard of dog leashing. Not that any of the other dog owners we saw observed this leash silliness. I'm not sure why some people hate dogs so much, but the minority of us who own dogs will continue to let them enjoy the forest with us as humans and dogs have done together for countless millennia. ![]() |
