I picked up Russell Brand's Recovery thinking that it would be a novel take on the subject of addiction. Disappointingly it was only a regurgitation of the 12 step program translated into Brand's flowy, high register yet profanity laden vernacular. His repeated insistence that an atheist can believe in a "higher power" was sadly typical of the 12 step cult. And while I was reading it Brand got deplatformed due to allegations from a number of women that lead even the Economist to write a scathing article about him this week. I think deplatforming people with political opinions is stifling to debate, and Russell Brand is no different. So the book became something of a badge of honor to read in public even though I didn't entirely agree with its content.
