10 June 2024 This past week I ran races in two cantons I hadn't before, the 41. Haldi-Berlauf and the 28. Zugerberg Finanz Classic, to knock off the cantons of Uri and Zug. That only leaves three of Switzerland's twenty-six cantons left to run in. They were both two beautiful hillclimbs, although the Haldi race was more vertical distance than I'd done before (over 1400m). And at the end of the Haldi race we had to walk the 5-6 km back DOWN to the top station of the cable car. That's the Alps for you! Afterward Iwona and I motored up to nearby Gotthard pass, which just recently opened for the year, to see the snow walls. Shades of Christmas in Tahoe. After that we came back down for a swim in the Vierwaldstadtersee. This seemingly incongruous pair of activities were nevertheless a delight for us and the dogs. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With the Zug race Wednesday and then the Uri one last night, it would have already been a tiring but exciting week. But the week started with Iwona's sister and partner here and driving to Fribourg to celebrate Iwona's 50th with her cousin. We did everything from cake to karaoke to riding the alpine coaster on the Schwarzensee. Tuesday evening we relaxed on the lake, but Thursday evening I went into Zürich for a meetup with Aleister Cockburn, who's claim to fame is co-authorship of the Agile Manifesto. An interesting evening of conversation got even longer when a friend invited me to watch him play bass in a band. Then Friday I couldn't resist more running on a sunny, rainless evening. Also Saturday was the Wetziker Stadtfest, where I saw kids competing in this crazy activity: |
