1 July 2024 - Nürnberg

Yesterday we started our Summer vacation a little early. Instead of driving to Wrocław in a single go we left in the afternoon and stopped here in Nürnberg, which to American ears is best known for the Nuremburg Trials of the Nazis held after WWII. There's a museum for that of course. And one can also see the old parade grounds where the Nazis held their enourmous rallies featured in Leni Riefenstals' propaganda Triumph des Willens. But Nürnberg is a much older city than that, dating back a thousands years at least. We stayed inside the old city walls, because as with many old Germanic cities the path of the old walls form a loop of parkland that makes for a good run. So bright and early this morning Paula, Eddie, and I headed out to run the loop. Amazingly the city walls have been mostly preserved or reconstructed (I don't know which) and there is a nearly continuous path through the old moat alongside fields and playgrounds beneath the walls which often still have covered ramparts. There were a few street crossings along the way and a couple detours to find bridges over the Pegnitz River not under construction, but we mostly followed the walls.
