2 July 2024 - Wrocław Yesterday after running around Nürnberg with the dogs and visiting the Kaiserburg castle built on sandstone bluffs above the city, we got back into the car and continued our journey. Along the way we stopped at Lubiąż, where there's a giant abandoned Cistercian abbey. It's quite impressive compared to the still functioning one in Hauterive in Switzerland, but it was also used as an insane asylum for over a century between the Napleonic wars and WWII. There's a foundation that's trying to keep it from falling down and a nice restaurant in one of the smaller buildings on the grounds, but it mostly seems to be a grand structure wasting away. We arrived in Wrocław after a further stop to pick up Iwona's favorite moonshine. Pierogis for lunch, pierogis for dinner, and more likely today! This is my 3rd time in Wrocław and because Iwona lived here during college she has a strong connection to the city. The last two trips here were in 2022, but I still remember it well and this morning ran around the city moat again. Paula was with me last time, but it was new (sort of) for Eddie. Eddie actually grew up on the streets of Wrocław before he was captured, fostered, and then we rescued him. As such he has a strong, negative, emotional reaction to the streetcars. He has a fear of loud vehicles in general, but one can only imagine where the fear came from for a dog who grew up on the streets. He has a poorly healed ribcage from some sort of abuse or accident when he was a puppy. ![]() Part of the fun of Wrocław is also finding the gnomes around the city. The first ones appeared as guerrilla art in protest of communism in the 1980's, but today they are everywhere and provide pithy commentary on many institutions throughout the city. |
