8 July 2024 - Lublin We've spent the last 4 days in Warszawa, Poland's capital, staying with one of Iwona's childhood friends in the suburbs. Our anchor event for this whole vacation has been the Metallica concert in Warszawa. When Mirka heard we were coming she invited us to join her family in Slovakia next week on a lake near Bešeňová. And then when Kasia heard she said she would host us in Warsaw, so we ended up coming for 4 nights instead of just spending a couple days in the city. Then Mirka couldn't wait until next and brought along Alla, so there were four childhood girlfriends from Raciborz together. Our first day we took in the sights downtown with Kszysiu, Kasia's husband, acting as our tourguide. And of course the food was delicious the whole weekend. ![]() I can't not hear the Soviet anthem in my head when I look at this... Saturday, in contrast, was our first real lazy day of the vacation. There was nothing planned and Iwona and I ended up spending the afternoon at the local pool reading and swimming. While the girls chatted away in the evenings Kszysiu and I watched UEFA soccer matches and played pool. I'm definitely out of practice! Sunday evening was the big event - the Metallica concert - but first we spent the morning going to Chopin's birthplace and seeing another concert of his works. ![]() Me, Iwona, Kasia, Mirka, Alla, & Kszysiu Metallica was every bit as good as I'd hoped. The last time I saw them was at the Omni in Atlanta just before it was demolished. I went with my dad and Packie. Most of the songs they played last night were from the albums I listened to and learned to play as a kid: Whiplash, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Ride the Lightning, Sanitarium, The Call of Ktulu, Blackened, One, and Enter Sandman. As a tribute to the Polish band Maanam they also played "Kocham Cię, Kochanie Moje", which Iwona knew well. We got home late and got an early start today. ![]() |
