9 July 2024 - Krosno

Yesterday after leaving Warszawa we stopped in Czersk for lunch and to see the medieval castle there. It's been in ruins since the Swedes attacked it during the 30 Years War. It was started nearly a century ago though by a son of Harold Godwinson, the king who lost England to William the Conqueror in 1066 at the battle of Hastings. Amazing how connected history is sometimes! Then we went on to Lublin, where I got in some serious beertasting and we visited the castle which was used as a prison mostly for the 19th and twentieth centuries. The Nazis made it the center of the Jewish ghetto where they processed half the population of the city on to deathcamps. Then came the Russian Soviets who used it as an execution center for Poles who dared to continue to fight for their country. There is so much tragedy in Poland's history. We left Lublin this afternoon and headed south through Rzeszow to Krosno, where we saw our next medieval castle ruin, Zamek Kamieniec, on the hill above the city. We're spending tonight on the rynek, which is what the Polish call the main squares of their cities. During dinner we were treated to kids playing Metallica and Pantera for their own entertainment. I've now visited 13 of the 16 regions of Poland, which they call Voivodeships. Tomorrow it's on to Slovakia...
